Changed my oil today before I even realized it is Maintenance Monday. She's now full of some fresh Rotella 5w-40 Synthetic.

All my family's diesels run 15w-40 Rotella non-syn - most have some degree of leaks and are in excess of 250,000 miles, so the synthetic benefits aren't as clearly there.

Really 5w-40? For my mother's W123 (320K miles) we have used 15w-40 for the last 100K miles at least. For my and my sister's W123's we have used 15w-40 since we have owned the cars. They both have 200K-ish miles.

I'm at 176,000. There were existing leaks when I got it so I wasn't worried about causing them by going to synthetic. Now I'm just in the process of tracking them down. Oddly enough I have to add very little oil in between changes, even though it appears it is spewing out all over the place when one looks under the hood.

That's the only weight the synthetic comes in. I haven't noticed any ill side effects.
